new project

I have been working on a huge project over the last few months for the International Airport in Panama City Beach, Florida. The Interior Designer, Lori Bates, used to live here in Huntsville, and we have worked on several projects together. I always enjoy working with her because she is creative and discerning and seems to “get” her clients.

This project has several challenges. One is the odd shapes to the walls, and their sizes. The files are enormous-and there are eight of them. The approval process has been more difficult than normal, only because so many people have to approve it. But Lori has done a great job of keeping everyone on track, and the project moving. Right now we have two in production, four that I am cleaning up and getting ready to send to production today, and two we are in the approval stage.

I will post the designs after the project is completed. Which hopefully will be within the next two weeks. This will be a nice piece to show potential mural clients, as all the murals have different looks. They are all photograph images, one in a blended collage, the others arranged more methodically. It’s been fun, I love working on murals!

Ballet Girls Wins Silver at District ADDY Level

Ballet Girl wins Silver Award in Regional ADDY competition, moving on to National Competition.

This week I learned that my Ballet Girl, created for the Community Ballet Association won a Silver Award at the regional level of the American Advertising Federation (AAF).This area, District 7, includes all the AAF chapters in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and Louisiana.

She will be forwarded on to the National ADDY competition, which will be held at the beginning of May, in Washington DC. There are a total of five pieces from Huntsville eligible to compete at the National level, and I wish all of us the best of luck!

Gold Winner – Campaign for Arts and Sciences

This weekend our ADDY award winners were

announced, and I am pleased to say that the campaign I designed for Community Ballet’s 43rd Season won a Gold ADDY. The entire campaign includes posters, print ads, web ads, brochure, programs and t-shirts. This was an amazing project to work on. I love working with the Huntsville Ballet Company and School which are under the Community Ballet Association. and I am grateful for the creative freedom I was given to work with.

Gold Winner – ADDY Award

This weekend our ADDY winners were announced, and I am very pleased to say my illustration for Community Ballet’s Season campaign won a Gold ADDY for Elements of Design – Illustration, and a Special Recognition Award.

The whole campaign won a Gold ADDY for Campaign for Arts and Sciences. (you can see that on my Design page at this blog).

This meant a lot to me personally because this is my “signature” style of illustration, and I love working with the ballet. Working with Huntsville Ballet Artistic Director, Phillip Otto is fantastic, and Rachel Butler, the Huntsville Ballet School Director, is the perfect inspiration for me. I will often take my sketch book down to the studio and draw while my daughter takes class.

I am grateful I was given creative license to design the graphics for them, and hope that the award shines light on the talent at Huntsville Ballet Company, Huntsville Ballet School which operate under Community Ballet Association.

Pen on paper. Trees can be found in most of my notepads. Drawing branches while listening to a teacher drone on or a staff meeting actually helped me listen to what was being said. I have read in several sources that occupying the right (creative) side of the brain while the left brain (logical) is engaged helps you understand things better, or be more creative. I know that for me, repetitive strokes on the paper, like sweeping or mowing the lawn is almost therapeutic!

This is the letter D. I liked the concept of legs making the letters but didn’t like the stick-figure look. So I am going to use billowing costumes to help round out and soften the letters. We’ll see where this ends up, but I intend to make something out of them!

An artist I admire…

My eight-year old daughter drew this. I love it, of course because it’s from my daughter, but also because she has really captured some good design elements. The heart is actually drawn on the other side of the sheet, but it works great here…the simple drawing gets the message across perfectly and there is nothing contrived or forced about it. My point is communicating through images is natural…but most people are forced away from it as they grow up. I admire her talent…and incidentally, this does actually look like our puppy, Oscar.
